Chicken chatter…

One of our hens… is she less bird-brained than she appears?

“Why did the chicken cross the road? To impress scientists with its grasp of “representational signalling”, according to research… that suggests that hens are not bird brains after all.”

It’s not at all surprising that hens communicate (you just have to spend a bit of time with them to see this!), but the communication descibed here appears to be more sophisticated than merely expressing ‘anger’, ‘pleasure’ or ‘fear’ — and is the first demonstration in a non-primate of the use of specific calls when food is discovered.
