Pole of Inaccessibility reached – and Lenin is there!
Three British men (and a Canadian) – Team N2i – have become the first people to reach the exact geographical centre of Antarctica without any mechanical assistance. They were greeted by a bust of Lenin, erected by a mechanised Russian team in 1958.
“The freezing temperatures meant that it was too cold to celebrate reaching the pole with champagne. But they all enjoyed some whisky and also had some 95% strength alcohol with them which I’m sure warmed them up considerably.”
I’ve been following this expedition through the Team N2i site – great to hear they made it. Slightly disappointed that they haven’t celebrated by constructing a giant snow willy, though. Perhaps they have something even more puerile saved up.
